From games in the car ride there, to long points and turf burn on the field, to streaming the Super Bowl on a phone to watch on the ride home - PDQ was a big buundle of fun! Not to mention the biggest Caliente sleepover to date as we invaded Cameron's house - thanks again Cam and fam, we love and appreciate you!
Playing back-to-back tournaments is tough but with seven games to play and twelve people, Caliente managed to muster up enough spicy energy to keep the fire and desire high each day! The SoCal weather didn't disappoint either- two sunny and 75 degree blue bird days on the UCLA campus made for baked conditions as the heat radiated up off the turf like an oven!
Thankfully though everyone had their custom Caliente Desert Towels to keep ourselves cool on the sideline - which was a major key to making it through the weekend!
Seeing teams like CSU Long Beach, USC, UC Davis, and UC Berkeley who we don't normally get to play was refreshing and enabled us to pin point a number of strengths and weaknesses that we'll work to improve on in the coming weeks. With that said, things that worked well for us were quick transitions on a turn as well as our zone offense and defense. In zone "O" we were able to swing it well and move down the field, but ended up missing out on key throws and catches in the final third just outside of the end zone. That proved to hurt us more than once when we needed to make those key conversions count to stay in the game and keep it from getting too far away from us.
Day 1 went better than Day 2 as we went 3-1, only losing to Occidental by two points in the very first matchup of the weekend. Day 2 turned out a bit differently as we went 0-3. You'd think that going 0 and 3 would put a damper in the mood right? Well, wrong!
Sunday actually brought out the best in our team - both in effort and attitude! Instead of focusing on just the end result of a win or loss, we chose to focus in on what we were doing well. Whether it was making full-speed sharp cuts, putting on a hard mark, or swinging the disc more often, we tried to play to our strengths.
Although dwindling numbers due to injuries and tiredness did take its toll on us after sometime,
it made us all have to dig deep and fight on. The Beatles lyrics, "we get by with a little help from our friends" comes to mind because seeing everyone encouraging each other to push through the fatigue and keep the vibes high despite the challenges was amazing and for sure the best highlight of the weekend!
Despite not coming away with the most wins, we couldn't have asked for a better team effort and attitude last weekend! We're extremely proud of the performance that was on display despite the challenges faced and can't wait to come back even stronger for the next tournament - which isn't for quite some time so watch out!
In the meantime, stay spicy friends!

In Chinese culture rats were seen as a sign of wealth and surplus, and man was there a wealth of fun and a surplus of sun this past weekend! Firstly, a big thank you to Valley of the Sun (VOTS) Ultimate for putting on such an amazing tournament! We couldn't have asked for a better way to start our competitive season, especially since it took place right in our very own backyard of Phoenix, AZ! Oh, and we got to debut our new Savage jersey's!
Right from the start the weather was fabulous, the bananas were bountiful, and the energy was absolutely buzzing as men's and women's teams from Colorado, Arizona, California, New Mexico and Utah all came out to play some high level Ultimate here in the desert!
By 9am Saturday morning the fields were full and the action was already far from disappointing as teams got right down to hucking! Wave after wave of team chants and supporting fans cheers could be heard throughout the spacious 17 field venue of the Reach 11 Sports Complex. As for Caliente, our first game was against UNM - the eventual champions - at 10am so everyone was COAT (Cleats On And Throwing) by 9am!
Our Saturday line up went like this:
10am vs University of New Mexico, Bombshells - Result: Loss 7 - 12.
1:30 pm vs University of Arizona B, Sirens - Result: Win 13 - 0.
3:15pm vs University of Arizona A, Scorch - Result: Win 9 - 5.
5pm vs San Diego State University, Gnomes - Result: Loss 7 - 8.

After four long games of high level, competitive ultimate play and ladies from all teams putting their bodies on the line point after point and a tough loss on Universe, we ended the day 2-2.
Notable highlights included Jenna and Jada getting D's all day, Captain Cameron laying out left and right, Lisa's lovely long throws, and Sierra who finally got her layout catch after bidding numerous times earlier in the day! She wanted it and she got it...it was, in her own words, "Amaze!", you go girl! Also, shoutout to Alena who played in her very first tournament as a Caliente player! Woot woot!
Sunday proved to be shorter with two games but no less intense as we took on the eventual runners up University of Denver Hype at 10:45am and then the Northern Arizona University Gines in the Pines at 12:30pm.
After a close back and forth game, Hype came out victorious with a score of 9 - 7. Though Caliente brought on a heat wave for the second game to come out victorious against our beloved rivals NAU by a score of 7-5. Both games showed the determination, grit, and spirit that each team possessed and we enjoyed every minute of it!
There were plenty more amazing plays and moments had for learning over the two day span and we're so proud of how we operated as a team! We were able to implement a lot of what we'd been working on in practice leading up to this tournament which led us to play some really pretty ultimate on the field and finish 3-3 for the weekend!
This is just the first step in the right direction of working towards our goal of getting to Regionals, so stay tuned!
In the meantime, like and follow us on social media to stay up to date with the latest Caliente happenings!
In the meantime......stay spicy friends!

- (February 1-2) President's Day Qualifiers in Los Angeles, it's coming in hot so be on the lookout for another recap!
Welcome back for spring semester everyone! See what we did there? Spring-ing the spice, because it's spring semester, and it's going to be SPICY! Here's a quick recap and preview of what's to come for Caliente!
The past two weeks of practice have been an indicator that Caliente's headed for a HOT start to the competitive season! The girls got caught up on what went down over each other's winter break - or what didn't, it was break after all - while getting back into the swing of Ultimate.
Throws and catches were looking good, even for those who spent winter break in the snowy cold and might've had some icicles still attached to them. Drills were ran, jokes were had, and the excitement was in the air for our upcoming tournament, New Year's Fest!
New Year's Fest (aka NYF) is our first spring tournament and we're hyped! Spring semester is always so fun because we get to really see all of our hard work and practice from the fall pay off at the USAU sanctioned tournaments we compete against other schools in! Schools like NAU, U of A, UNM, UCLA, UCSD, SDSU, and many more.
It also happens to be the same time when we get our NEW jersey's! A lot of thought and corresponding with the reps over at Savage went into what you see below so shoutout to our VP Georgia and the good people at Savage!
We can't wait to show these off this weekend! It might be fair to say that we'll be the "sharpest" looking team out there!
If you can't make it out to the fields, check our social media for updates and to follow along with the action!
Stay Spicy my friends!
